Unfortunately, Sen. Karen Tallian's sensible bill, which would have replaced harsh criminal penalties for the possession of marijuana with a simple fine, did not receive a hearing or a vote in 2014. Sen. Tallian has long been a champion of improving marijuana laws in Indiana; her bill SB 314 would have reclassified possession of less than two ounces of marijuana as an infraction, removing the possibility of jail time and a criminal conviction, which can follow a person for life and affect job prospects and housing for a decade. National polling continues to show strong support for improving marijuana laws, and support for compassionate medical cannabis laws remains high. Unfortunately, there was no comprehensive medical marijuana bill put forth in Indiana in 2014.
